Outreach
It is important to me that my work is not limited to the lab and the classroom. I am always excited for opportunities to share our work, and linguistics in general, with a broader community. We have partnered with Eugene Science Center to both develop exhibits and to participate in hand-on demonstrations through programs like Meet a Scientist Day. I have also participated in Skype a Scientist, and was one of the winners of their “No Time Like the Presentation” contest to produce a 90 second abstract of our work for a general audience. I’ve been a pen pal in the Letters to a Prescientist program, a presenter at the Summer Academy to Inspire Learning, and I routinely give public talks through a variety of organizations, both locally and via remote presentations.
Service to the Field
My service to the field has primarily taken three forms: committee work in the area of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion, mentoring in official and unofficial capacities, and editorial work. I am currently an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Linguistic Society of America and am chair of Section Z (Linguistics and Language Sciences) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Increasing participation in academia
Committee on Gender Equity in Linguistics (COGEL): I have served in a number of roles on this committee, including serving as Chair for three years. I have worked on a number of initiatives with this program including the development of the Pop-Up Mentoring Program (PUMP) which is present at a number of conferences in linguistics and allied fields. PUMP provides one-time mentoring opportunities for any participant regardless of their gender or career stage. I have also helped to develop Resources for Equity and Inclusivity in Linguistics (REIL), intended for conference organizers and attendees. I also currently serve on the fundraising committee for SPARK Society.
Mentoring
I have participated in a variety of short- and long-term mentoring roles, including roles through PUMP (above), the Acoustical Society of America, and Women in Cognitive Science.
Editing
I am currently the Editor in Chief for Applied Psycholinguistics. I also have served an editor or am on the editorial board for a variety of journals including: Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Journal of Phonetics, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, and Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Cognitive Science.
